Haar

For anyone following local weather reports in the North East of Scotland, a local phrase which frequently crops up is "haar" (known elsewhere as a fret or coastal fog). This good Doric word with strong Scandinavian roots more than amply describes how one feels when it is spotted...."Haar" is muttered under the breath as the cold damp breeze brings in the rapidly flowing mist. Here haar is seen clinging to the top of Whitehouse Crags and flowing across the Denburn towards Kist Hill.
