I wonder if these folk remember making these carvings on a beech tree back in 1945 and 1946? Many of the trees in this shelter belt have similar carvings.

I know that tree but can't shed any light on the name! However I think I can now safely confess to a few other carvings in the immediate vicinity...Iain McLennan

Thanks Iain...this was one of several photographs I took of these trees, being fascinated by the stories they told and the way they recorded small fragments of local history....I'll look out the others and maybe post one or two more.
